NEW WORKS

I’ve been busy, busy getting lots of paint time in. I completed the Strada Easel challenge again this year - a challenge to paint from life every day during the month of September. It is such a good discipline and I always feel like I’ve grown as an artist afterwards.

This collection includes several paintings from the challenge, as well as others I’ve worked on over the last 5 months. There are quite a few flower still life pieces - dahlias (which we grew this year - I recommend!), plus sunflowers, ranunculus, hydrangeas…

Then the landscapes - my painting buddy, Ann, and I stumbled upon some golden autumnal soybean fields. So much fun to paint! Perfect fall days, beautiful scenery, and friendly people stopped to chat. Well, okay, one neighbor evidently had to get some target practice in, so that was a bit unnerving, but the rest was ideal.

Although some of you live in other parts of the world, you probably saw something in the news about the devastation Hurricane Helene brought to western North Carolina and parts of Tennessee and Georgia. As of now there are 102 confirmed storm-related fatalities in North Carolina alone, with more than 230 across 6 states, plus some still missing. And that’s not to mention the loss of or partial destruction of homes, businesses, and so on.

I grieve for those who have lost so much.

40% of proceeds from the painting below, Our Beautiful Mountains, will be donated to Samaritan’s Purse, a trusted organization which does great work all over the world, and is headquartered in the mountains of North Carolina. They’ve airlifted food, water, medical supplies, and generators, and have installed 3 water filtration systems in the Asheville area to make clean water accessible. They will be there for the long haul, helping to rebuild communities.

New Works will be released November 13th. Don’t forget - email subscribers will get access 24 hours early, plus special pricing during that time! You can sign up below-

In the News:
I am so pleased to hear that my painting, Sailboats in Georgetown Harbor, was accepted in to the American Impressionist Society Associate members juried competition! They received 2,242 artworks for jurying and 258 artworks were juried into the exhibition. It’s an honor to have my work alongside so many artists whose work I admire.

Fall 2023

It has been a whirlwind of a year, with a wedding and some family health issues, but I am taking a minute to breathe and am ready to release the landscapes I’ve been working on since early this year.

I’ve found a couple of plein air painting buddies, Sharon and Ann, and we’ve had some fun times (we do call ourselves The Fun Club) painting together in strong wind, beating sun, and swarming bugs. It’s an adventure. I’m pretty sure one East African Crowned Crane tried to propose to Ann at the Sylvan Heights Bird Park, but she’s already taken. It is also both encouraging and humbling painting in front of people, in the open, in the elements. We do get some humorous comments. But way more kind ones. I learn so much about color and atmosphere when painting en plein air.
